방언 기도(glossolalia)는 의식적 언어가 제3의 언어로 변환되는 현상이다. <Prayer Translator>은 이러한 방언의 '변환 메커니즘'을 전자음악적으로 재현하는 인터랙티브 사운드 시스템이다.
관객의 언어는 해체되고, 음소 단위로 분해되어 음악적 구조로 재구성된다. <Prayer Translator>는 고해성사의 창문처럼 내밀한 고백의 매개가 되며, 동시에 말이 알고리즘을 통과하며 소리로 변환되는 통로가 된다.
이 작업은 기독교 세계관을 바탕으로 기도를 위한 인터페이스를 탐구하는 'Tephillah' 시리즈의 일부다. 이전 작업 <Prayer Conductor>가 립모션과 오브제를 활용한 제스처 기반 타이핑 인터페이스였다면, <Prayer Translator>는 목소리로 언어를 입력하는 인터페이스로, 관객 참여형 작업으로 확장된다.

Glossolalia, or speaking in tongues, is a phenomenon in which conscious language is transformed into a third language. Prayer Translator is an interactive sound system that electronically recreates this “mechanism of transformation” inherent in glossolalia.
The participant’s speech is deconstructed and fragmented into phonemes, which are then reassembled into a musical structure. Prayer Translator serves as a medium for intimate confession—like the window of a confessional booth—while also becoming a passage through which words pass through algorithms and transform into sound.
This work is part of the Tephillah series, which explores interfaces for prayer based on the Christian worldview. While the previous work, Prayer Conductor, employed a gesture-based typing interface using Leap Motion and physical objects, Prayer Translator expands the concept into a participatory experience by introducing a voice-based input interface.
