Memory circuits tangle, distort, erase, and refill in endless cycles. According to neuroscience research, human memory is not a fixed storage but a fluid process that reconstructs itself each time it is recalled, constantly transforming through the strengthening and weakening of synaptic connections.
<Trace> is a participatory installation that tracks elusive memories and experiences of déjà vu. Déjà vu—the sensation of having experienced something that never actually happened—suggests either a malfunction in memory or a temporal rupture between past and present. A chair sits empty in the installation, yet a human shadow falls across it. Where does the disappeared "him" or his vanished memory begin?
The installation consists of a chair, sheer curtains draped over it, and a sheer fabric frame positioned nearby. Sheer fabric, which allows light to pass through while blurring forms, materially embodies the incompleteness and ambiguity of memory. Images representing memory storage and circuits are projected onto these surfaces. Motifs of tree branches and roots resembling synapses, flower buds, blooming flowers, and the growth process of beans and fruits express memory storage and circuits through the imaginative metaphor of "plants nourished by memories." Just as plant growth changes with time and environment, this metaphor suggests that memories also grow, transform organically, and sometimes wither and disappear. I constructed computational trees (memory circuitry) using L-systems, an algorithmic method for simulating plant growth.
performance score for interaction
Grab Gesture Interaction:
A story that seemed so vivid, so certain. But when you reach out to grasp it, the text scatters and flies away like startled birds. What was that memory? It dissolves the moment you try to hold it, leaving only the ghost of certainty, the trace of something once known.
Pinching Gesture Interaction:
When you pinch at the air, reaching for a memory, trying to hold onto it, random sections of the memory circuitry(tree) flash briefly. Each gesture illuminates different, unpredictable fragments. Memory fruits glimmer and fade. The memories slip through your fingers.
Through the utilization of Leap Motion, a hand gesture recognition device, an interactive projection mapping project emerges, inviting spectators to grasp and release memories flowing through the tips of their fingers. With each repetitive motion, the audience embarks on a visual exploration, delving into the palpable sensations existing on the other side, engaging with the ethereal realm of memories.
